Footballs coming home…to your holiday home
SO there you are on the beach at the weekend with the sun sizzling your body and a beer at your side, you have some great investment properties to view, but you are still not happy. Something important and fundamental to your life is missing, you are pining for your football fix.
This weekend August 25 & 26, the Spanish La Liga season kicks off and the Canary Islands is a hot bed of football, all within 2 divisions of the big boys Real Madrid, Sevilla, Barcelona and the rest. The Segunda (2nd) Division is home to CD Tenerife (www.clubdeportivotenerife.com) and from Gran Canaria, UD Las Palmas (www.udlaspalmas.es) .Only 5 seasons ago they were both in La Liga and a good season this time round could see them back there within the year. Both teams get big crowds of 15,000 plus and play a very high standard of football with passion and noise replacing some of the more unsavoury aspects of UK crowds. CD Tenerife even have their own British based fan club the Armada Sur (www.armadasur.com) and the minimum ticket prices of 15 euros at either ground, would barely buy a bag of crisps at a UK game.
There is still a feeling that lower league football in Spain is still played on gravel type pitches but these days even little villages have excellent grass and not a burnt leg in sight. The third tier of Spanish football, Segunda B is home to a host of Canarian teams hoping to reach the big time. In Gran Canaria there are 2 aspirants, Universidad Las Palmas (www.ulpgc.es ) and in the south east, near the main resorts, Vecindario (www.udvecindario.es). Back in Tenerife, and also in the south east is Raqui San Isidro ( www.raquisanisidro.com ).
UD Lanzarote ( www.udlanzarote.es )are based at Arrecife and over on Fuerteventura they have 2 teams to cheer on, UD Fuerteventura (www.udfuerteventura.org ) and UD Pajara Playa de Jandia (www.udpajara-playasdejandia.com ) who both play at Puerto del Rosaria. Fuerteventura and Lanzarote also have their own slightly smaller but hust as passionate British following of ex pats.
None of these teams may be your first love but they may soon become your mistress and help to fill that void within you. They can’t promise you hot Bovril at half time but you will soon learn to enjoy an ice cream and a cold drink instead.
